Helen Hayes Nominations

It’s awards season, and in DC that means our very own Helen Hayes Awards, celebrating our homespun talents, and the productions that whirl through here on a tour. Usually I feel very strongly about who should win awards, but this year I don’t. There are a couple categories where I have clear favorites, but for the most part I don’t recall being blown away by the nominees. So I dug back into the archives of what I’ve seen over the past year, in order to help me recall my favorites. No DC production was able to earn my elusive 5 star rating in 2008, but here are the ones that really stuck out in my mind:

Argonautika – Shakespeare Theatre
Antony and Cleopatra – Shakespeare Theatre
Lieutenant of Inishmore – Signature Theatre
Next to Normal – Arena Stage

Of these, Next to Normal seems to be the only one receiving the nominations it deserves. I mean not a single nomination for the Roman Rep? Are you people crazy? Suzanne Bertish was brilliant as Cleopatra. And no nominations for the Arthur Miller rep at Arena Stage? I’m not forgetting what year these productions happened, am I?

Here are those nominations, with my comments when I felt like it. I would love to hear your thoughts as well.

Outstanding Choreography, Resident Production
Michael J. Bobbitt, Goodnight Moon, Adventure Theatre and Tribute Productions
Karma Camp, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Signature Theatre
Robin McFarquhar, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare Theatre Company

My pick is probably 12th Night for Costumes, but where is the nomination for Measure for Pleasure?

John Vreeke, Boom, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company

Ethan McSweeney, hands down for an excellent production of a terribly hard play. I found Posner and Teller’s Macbeth to be extremely misguided. David Muse’s Romeo and Juliet was a strong production, but a couple directing elements that weren’t what they should have been.

Jerry Whiddon, Blackbird, The Studio Theatre

Of this list, Ted van Griethuysen. But what about Andrew Long, Delaney Williams, Karl Miller? And people, we all know Aubrey Deeker is one of my favorite DC actors. But really? His first Helen Hayes nomination and it’s for Boom? I enjoyed the play, but it wasn’t exactly earth-shattering. (Ha! Yes it was! Boom!) Seriously though, I think every other part I’ve seen him in over the last three years has required more chops.
